The answer depends entirely on where you charge - and the gap between cheapest and most expensive is about 10x. This guide breaks down the maths for the three main charging scenarios, with three realistic annual cost examples.

The cost-per-mile formula

Two numbers do all the work.

EV cost per mile is determined by two factors:

  1. Vehicle efficiency, measured in miles per kWh (mi/kWh). Typical UK EVs return 3-4 mi/kWh in mixed real-world driving, with smaller EVs (VW e-Up, Renault Zoe) reaching 4.5-5 mi/kWh and larger SUVs/4x4s (Audi e-tron, Tesla Model X) dipping to 2.5-3 mi/kWh.

The formula is straightforward:

Cost per mile = Cost per kWh / Miles per kWh

Hidden costs people forget

Things that don't show up in the per-mile number.

The per-mile figures above cover the energy cost only. Three other variables worth knowing about:

  • Home charger amortisation. A 7kW Pod Point / Wallbox install costs ~GBP 800-1,200 and typically lasts 7-10 years. Spread over 8,000 miles/year, that's roughly 1.4-2.0p/mile - small but not zero.
  • Battery degradation. Real-world UK EVs lose ~1-2% of battery capacity per year. The cost of progressive range reduction is hard to monetise but factors in if you keep the car 8+ years.
  • Servicing. EVs need less routine work (no oil changes, fewer wear items) but tyres wear ~20-30% faster than ICE due to torque + weight. Net result is usually slightly cheaper than ICE servicing.

How much does an EV tariff cut your cost per mile?

This is where the biggest savings hide, and it is the single most important lever you control. Charging on a standard electricity rate of around 28p per kWh, a typical EV doing about 3.5 miles per kWh costs roughly 8p a mile. Switch to a dedicated EV tariff with a cheap overnight window of around 7p per kWh, and that same mile drops to about 2p, a saving of roughly 75 per cent on your fuel.

Put another way, charging at home on a good overnight rate can make electric motoring cheaper per mile than almost anything else on the road, while relying on public rapid chargers at 60 to 80p per kWh pushes the cost back up to around 20p a mile, more expensive than petrol. Does cold weather increase your cost per mile?

Yes, noticeably. In cold weather an EV uses more energy per mile, because cabin heating draws real power and the battery itself is less efficient when it is cold. A car that manages 3.5 to 4 miles per kWh in mild conditions can drop to around 2.8 to 3 miles per kWh in a hard winter, which pushes your cost per mile up by roughly a fifth to a quarter even on the same tariff.

It evens out over the year, so your annual average sits between the summer and winter figures, but it is worth remembering when a winter charging session seems to deliver fewer miles than you expected.
