How the finder decides

Budget acts as a hard filter - we exclude chargers your ceiling cannot reach rather than quietly recommending them anyway. The remaining questions weigh the constraints that separate the field: solar diversion (where the Zappi is the benchmark), Intelligent Octopus Go integration (where Ohme leads), cable format and kerb appeal.

Q01Do I need a smart charger by law?

Yes - since 2022 every new home charge point sold in the UK must meet the Smart Charge Points Regulations, so all the units in this finder schedule off-peak charging automatically.

Q02Is 7kW enough, or should I get a 22kW unit?

7kW is right for almost every UK home. 22kW needs a three-phase supply that most houses do not have, costs thousands to add, and many EVs cannot accept 22kW AC anyway. Our 22kW vs 7kW guide runs the numbers.

Q03Can I claim the £500 EV Chargepoint Grant?

Only if you rent, own a flat, or are a landlord - homeowners in houses are not eligible. The grant comes off the installed price through an OZEV-approved installer, and it must be claimed before installation.

Q04Tethered or untethered - which holds value better?

Untethered units age better: the socket outlasts cable-wear and works with future cable standards. Tethered wins on day-to-day convenience. It is preference, not performance.
