How the finder decides

Each answer scores the six candidate outcomes against the constraints that actually decide this choice: home charging access, smart-scheduling compatibility, solar, and whether you are willing to switch supplier. Hard constraints exclude rather than score - if you cannot charge at home, no overnight tariff will be recommended at any price.

The rates behind the recommendations are the July 2026 figures from our reviews: Intelligent Octopus Go at 6.99p/kWh off-peak, E.ON Next Drive Smart at 8p, British Gas EV Power at 9p and OVO Charge Anytime at 14p smart-scheduled. The full ranking with regional rates is in Best EV Tariffs UK 2026.

We do not sell energy and no supplier pays for placement. When you are ready to switch, you go direct to the supplier.

Q01Do I need a smart meter for an EV tariff?
Yes - every EV tariff requires a working smart meter (SMETS2, or a compatible SMETS1) so the supplier can bill your off-peak usage separately. Suppliers will usually fit one for free when you switch.
Q02Can I get an EV tariff without a home charger?
Technically yes with some suppliers, but it rarely makes sense - the cheap rate only applies to electricity you use in the window, and without a charger you cannot shift much usage into it.
Q03Will switching tariff affect my gas supply?
EV tariffs are electricity tariffs. Most suppliers let you pair them with their standard gas tariff, or you can leave gas where it is - though dual-fuel discounts sometimes change the maths.
Q04How long does a switch take?
Around five working days under the current switching guarantee, and there is no supply interruption. Exit fees are rare on EV tariffs but check your current fixed deal before moving.
