Do the BYD Atto 3 and Tesla Model Y use the same home charger?

Yes - and that is the most useful thing to know if you are choosing between the two cars, or already own one and are considering the other. Both the BYD Atto 3 and the Tesla Model Y use the Type 2 AC connector (also called Mennekes) for home charging in the UK and Europe. Tesla switched to the Type 2 standard on European-spec cars back in 2019, and BYD (a Chinese automaker that is now one of the largest EV manufacturers globally) has always shipped UK cars with Type 2.

The practical implication: every 7 kW UK home charge point sold in 2026 plugs into either car. The Octopus Intelligent Go tariff works with both. The best UK home chargers all support both. Neither car will reliably charge from 0 to 100% in one overnight off-peak window. You do not need it to - most UK EV drivers do 20 to 60 miles a day and top up little-and-often rather than running the battery flat between charges.

Which tariff strategy is cheaper?

Tariff cost is identical at the meter - both cars draw electricity at the same off-peak rate. What differs is how easily each car schedules charging to land in that off-peak window.

What about public rapid charging and motorway journeys?

Both cars use the CCS (Combined Charging System) connector for DC rapid charging at public networks. The BYD Atto 3 peaks at around 88 kW DC, which is modest by 2026 standards; charging from 10-80% takes around 30-40 minutes at a 100 kW+ rapid charger.
